Fig. 12 Furnace/Cryostat in situ insert for soft or hard x-rays (to P K edge) and/or electron yield detection.
This is a cylindrical, water cooled, gas-tight device with resistance heater and
LN2 cooling loop to be used in conjunction with the basic furnace body. Since the sample holder window is thin, the inside of the furnace must be flushed with He and there are no absorbing windows between the sample and the ion chamber detector; hence, x-ray edges down to the K edge of P may be measured as well as all those of higher energy. Either pressed disk type or free flowing powder samples may be used. With powders the cell is enclosed front and back with Kapton (to 450 C) or thin Be windows for fluorescent or normal absorption mode. An optional electron yield detector can be used with pressed disk or other solid samples while controlling the temperature and atmosphere over the sample. The inside of the furnace body is flushed with He rather than evacuated. Temperature range 150-1100K. Complete, with 4 Be windows and roll of 1.25 in. width Kapton tape.
